The Walking Dead star admits he demanded his exit: ‘I realised I could quit’

The only thing that is certain about the show is that nobody is safe – even the central characters.

The Walking Dead season eight saw Carl (Chandler Riggs) being bitten by a walker and subsequently dying.

There have also been a number of minor deaths, including members of the Hilltop and Kingdom communities.

In fact, there are only four characters from season one still alive and kicking – Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Carol (Melissa McBride) and Morgan (Lennie James).

Morgan, however, will be leaving the show and heading over to Fear The Walking Dead season four.

But one actor has come forward and revealed he chose to be killed off in the show after growing unhappy with behind-the-scenes goings-on.

Jeffrey DeMunn has come forward and admitted he chose for his character Dale to meet his grisly end.

He told Cleveland.com: “Dale’s death was my decision. I was furious about how Frank [Darabont] was pushed out of the show.

“I called them and said, ‘It’s a zombie show. Kill me. I don’t want to do this anymore.’”

“I spent a week not being able to take a full breath. And then I realised, ‘Oh, I can quit.’

“So I called them and said, ‘It’s a zombie show. Kill me. I don’t want to do this anymore.’ It was an immense relief for me.”

In July 2011, Darabont’s speedy departure from the show as showrunner was confirmed, with claims following that he was fired.

On the show, Dale was one of the main characters until season two when he was ambushed by a walker and died.

He managed to avoid being bitten, however the walker ripped open his stomach and he was then shot and killed out of mercy by Daryl.

DeMunn did say he enjoyed being part of the show, despite the backstage drama and intense Atlanta heat.

He said: “The hear had a way of uniting us all, cast and crew. You kept an eye on your friends under those conditions.”

The Walking Dead airs Mondays at 9pm on Fox UK.
