It’s official. The zombie apocalypse is happening in the Austin area.
Austin Film Commission Director Brian Gannon confirmed “Fear the Walking Dead” is filming in the Austin area following fan speculation and photos showing a secret film set at Dell Diamond in Round Rock earlier this month.
“We’re grateful AMC moved the production in the Austin area,” he said. “What’s great about a TV series is it keeps our crew employed for long periods of time. We want productions in town generating money for the local economy and not moving to Atlanta or Kentucky.”
According to an Austin city permit, the production filmed this week in Southeast Austin.
On Monday, the Texas Film Commission gave an exclusive sneak peek of cast and crew members on the Austin-area set of “The Walking Dead” prequel series.
In a live video posted on the Texas Film Commission’s Facebook page, actor Lennie James talks about his first day on set as he makes his way to hair and makeup, while a man with a cowboy hat lurks in the background.
The video confirms Morgan Jones, played by James, is a cross-over character from “The Walking Dead” to the show’s prequel series “Fear the Walking Dead.”
James said now that the secret is out, he is excited to finally be free to explore Austin.
“One good thing about the secret being out and all of you knowing about the crossover or some sense of what the crossover is going to be is that I’m allowed to leave my hotel room,” he said. “I can finally get out and see Austin and eat some of its fantastic food.”
Because his character has not been killed off on the show, many are wondering how he will tie into “The Walking Dead” companion series and if it means he will be leaving the film set for good.
Earlier this month, fans predicted a crossover between the two AMC shows after photos taken from a drone revealed an RV from “The Walking Dead” series parked at Dell Diamond.
